Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing® (SE)
A Body-Based Approach to Healing Trauma
If you’ve tried talking about what happened but still feel anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that don’t make sense, it may be because trauma is not held in thoughts alone — it lives in the body and nervous system.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a gentle, body-based approach to trauma healing that helps the nervous system move out of survival mode and back toward regulation, resilience, and choice.
Rather than asking you to relive traumatic events, SE works by helping you notice and follow the body’s natural signals — supporting the system in completing protective responses that were interrupted or overwhelmed at the time of the experience.
Trauma Is What Happens When the Body Can’t Complete Survival
When something overwhelming occurs, the nervous system automatically mobilizes fight, flight, or freeze responses to protect you. These responses are instinctive and adaptive.
The difficulty arises when there is no opportunity to fully resolve or discharge that survival energy.
Instead of settling, the nervous system remains activated or shut down, which can show up as:
- chronic anxiety or hypervigilance
- emotional numbness or shutdown
- irritability or reactivity
- difficulty sleeping or concentrating
- chronic tension or pain
- feeling disconnected from yourself or others
Somatic Experiencing works directly with these patterns — not by forcing change, but by supporting the body’s innate capacity to regulate itself.
How Somatic Experiencing Works
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Peter A. Levine, PhD, through decades of interdisciplinary study, observation, and research in neuroscience, physiology, and stress response. It is grounded in the understanding that the body has an innate wisdom for healing when given the right conditions.
In SE sessions, we work slowly and collaboratively, using:
- present-moment awareness
- gentle tracking of bodily sensations
- careful pacing and titration
- building internal and external resources
This approach allows the nervous system to renegotiate traumatic activation in manageable pieces, restoring a sense of safety and coherence without retraumatization.
What Clients Often Notice
As the nervous system becomes more regulated, clients often experience:
- reduced anxiety and reactivity
- improved sleep and concentration
- greater emotional range and stability
- decreased physical symptoms
- increased capacity for connection
- a deeper sense of agency and resilience
Healing unfolds gradually, at a pace the body can tolerate — supporting lasting change rather than temporary relief.
A Gentle, Respectful Approach
Somatic Experiencing honors the intelligence of the body and the importance of safety. There is no pressure to relive or analyze traumatic events. Instead, the focus is on restoring the body’s ability to respond flexibly to life — so the past no longer dominates the present.
What a Somatic Experiencing® Session Might Look Like
A Somatic Experiencing session is often quieter and slower than people expect.
You might begin by sharing what has been bringing you in — perhaps anxiety that doesn’t make sense, a sense of being on edge, or feeling disconnected from yourself. We would not rush into the story of what happened. Instead, we would pause and notice what is happening right now in your body as you speak.
You might be invited to gently notice sensations — such as tightness in your chest, a heaviness in your stomach, or warmth in your hands. There is no pressure to change anything. The focus is simply on becoming curious and present with what your body is already doing.
At times, we may slow things down and orient to the room — noticing the support of the chair, the sound of the room, or your feet on the floor. These moments help the nervous system recognize safety in the present, which is essential for healing.
As the session unfolds, small shifts may occur — a deeper breath, a softening of tension, a feeling of settling. We follow these changes carefully, allowing the body to complete responses it couldn’t finish before, without overwhelm or reliving the past.
Throughout the session, you remain in choice. We move at a pace your system can tolerate. There is no agenda to “fix” you — only to support your body’s natural capacity to regulate, respond, and restore balance.
Many people leave sessions feeling more grounded, present, or connected to themselves — even if nothing dramatic occurred. Over time, these small moments of regulation add up to meaningful change.
A Brief Example
You might come in noticing persistent anxiety.
As you talk, we notice that your shoulders are lifted and your breath feels shallow. Instead of analyzing why, we gently stay with the sensation of the shoulders and allow the breath to find its own rhythm.
After a moment, your shoulders drop slightly and you feel warmth moving down your arms. You notice a sense of relief — not because anything was solved, but because your nervous system completed a small piece of a survival response.
This is how healing often happens in Somatic Experiencing: slowly, respectfully, and from the inside out.
